Local & National News | July 10, 2023
Explore the key issues facing Memphis, Tennessee, and the qualifications needed in a new mayor to address these challenges, including economic development, education, crime, infrastructure, and affordable housing.

Issues Facing Memphis, Tennessee

Memphis, Tennessee, faces several issues that set the agenda for a new mayor. Some of the key challenges include:

1. Economic development: Memphis needs to attract new businesses and investments to create jobs and stimulate economic growth. This includes supporting small businesses and entrepreneurs, as well as attracting larger corporations to the city.

2. Education: Improving the quality of education in Memphis is crucial for the city's future. A new mayor should focus on increasing funding for schools, supporting teacher development, and implementing innovative educational programs to ensure that all students have access to quality education.

3. Crime and public safety: Memphis has struggled with high crime rates, particularly in certain neighborhoods. A new mayor should prioritize public safety by investing in community policing, addressing the root causes of crime, and working with local organizations to create safe spaces for residents.

4. Infrastructure: Memphis needs to invest in its infrastructure, including roads, bridges, and public transportation. A new mayor should work to secure funding for these projects and ensure that they are completed efficiently and effectively.

5. Affordable housing: As the city grows, it's essential to ensure that all residents have access to affordable housing. A new mayor should work to create more affordable housing options and address issues related to gentrification and displacement.

Qualifications for a New Mayor

Considering the issues facing Memphis, the city needs a mayor with the following qualifications:

1. Leadership experience: A new mayor should have a proven track record of leading large organizations or government entities, demonstrating the ability to manage complex issues and make tough decisions.

2. Understanding of local issues: A deep understanding of the challenges facing Memphis is crucial for a new mayor. They should be familiar with the city's history, demographics, and unique challenges to develop effective solutions.

3. Collaborative approach: A new mayor should be able to work with diverse stakeholders, including city council members, community organizations, and residents, to build consensus and develop collaborative solutions to the city's problems.

4. Strong communication skills: The ability to communicate effectively with the public and the media is essential for a new mayor. They should be able to articulate their vision for the city and explain complex issues in a way that is accessible and engaging.

5. Commitment to equity and inclusion: A new mayor should prioritize equity and inclusion in their policies and decision-making, ensuring that all residents have access to opportunities and resources.

In the upcoming mayoral election on October 5, 2023, twelve candidates have declared their candidacy, including six Democrats, three Republicans, and two independents[4]. The election is nonpartisan, but many candidates are affiliated with a political party. The current city charter states that candidates must be at least 30 years old, not hold any office or agency in the city, Shelby County, or state, not owe any taxes or be a freeholder, and have resided in the city for five years prior to the election[5]. However, a recent ruling by Chancellor JoeDae Jenkins determined that the five-year residency requirement was eliminated by a 1996 ballot referendum[8].
