It takes about $1 million every year to keep Overton Park beautiful and welcoming, and Overton Park Conservancy was created to raise the funds and do the work. We believe in one park that uniquely connects our community, protects history and our environment, and inspires a new generation of park supporters.
The nonprofit Conservancy was founded in December 2011. Under a ten-year management agreement with the City of Memphis, the Conservancy was given the authority to manage 184 acres of public parkland including the Greensward, Rainbow Lake and East Parkway picnic areas, the formal gardens, Veterans Plaza, and the Old Forest State Natural Area.
The Conservancy’s work includes daily maintenance and cleaning, repairs, landscaping, and upkeep. We also have undertaken capital improvement projects such as building Overton Bark and Bike Gate, reimagining Rainbow Lake Playground, and adding welcome gateways at the Old Forest entrances. Our management of the Old Forest includes trail work, invasive species removal, creation of interpretive content, and research into long-term forest health.
