Marcus Mitchell is currently a Major with the Memphis Police Department. Born in Memphis, Tennessee, Major Mitchell grew up in South Memphis and Whitehaven. He graduated from Hamilton High School in 1988, where he played Basketball under the tutelage of Coach Ted "Coach A" Anderson. Upon graduating, he continued his basketball career at LeMoyne-Owen College under the Legendary Coach Jerry Johnson. During his Senior year, he served as Team Captain and eventually graduated in 1992, with a Bachelor of Business Administration.

In 1993 he joined the Memphis Police Department and for the past 29 years has served in various capacities, including:

  • 1993-1996, Uniform Patrol Officer - South Precinct
  • 1996-1999, Task Force Officer - South Precinct
  • 1999-2004, Detective - Organized Crime Unit (Narcotics Unit)
  • 2004-2010, Officer - Hickory Hill Co-Act Unit (Community Policing Unit)
  • 2010-2016, Sergeant - Economic Crimes Bureau (White Collar Crimes)
  • 2016-2021, Lieutenant - Airways Station & Ridgeway Station
  • 2021-Present, Major - Ridgeway Station

While working with the Memphis Police Dept’s Community Action Unit, his passion for serving young people was ignited and he created and implemented different projects to engage and mentor the youth. Major Mitchell is the only Certified Fraud Examiner in the Memphis Police Dept. and was recognized as one of the Department’s 2020 Supervisors of the Year.

In his spare time, he volunteered with several local youth sports leagues and spent many years coaching, mentoring, and counseling young people in the Police Athletic League, Whitehaven Junior Sports Association, Shelby Youth Sports, and Memphis WarEagles Organization. During this time, he also coached football & basketball at American Way Middle School and football at Cordova High School. He also mentors with the Memphis Grizzlies Team Mentor Program.

He is a proud member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. where service is a priority. He embraces the opportunity to serve the community of Memphis, with special emphasis on youth development. Additionally, in his leisure time, he enjoys learning and playing the game of golf.

Major Mitchell’s personal philosophy is “Tenaciously lead and teach our kids today, so they will be successful adults tomorrow.”

His future professional goals are to honorably retire from the Memphis Police Dept. in 2022, then pursue a career in Certified Fraud Examination and in Politics as your Shelby County Juvenile Court Clerk.
