Sometimes

a little compassion can go a long way

March 11, 2019

On March 1, the non-profit agencies teamed up to host their “Project Pack the Purse” event and gave away free purses filled with essential, personal hygiene items to the middle school girls. Items included toothbrushes, toothpaste, mouthwash, deodorant, lotion, feminine products and soap. More than 60 purses were packed and given away.

Sometimes, a little compassion can go a long way. That’s the message Shelby Residential and Vocational Services (SRVS) and Wear It Well Inc. were promoting to young women during their recent visit to Oakhaven Middle School.

“Our goal of Project Pack the Purse is to make certain that these young women have the things they need to continue to be able to come to school and not be ashamed for not having what’s needed,” said Felicia Robinson, SRVS’ director of community services.

In addition to the purse giveaway, the students also participated in the “Love the Skin You’re In” program, which focused on the importance of building self-esteem and raised awareness on anti-bullying. During the nearly hour-long program, Katina Holland, CEO of Wear It Well Inc., shared personal stories and described the long term, emotional impact bullying can have on a child. She also gave advice to students about what they can do if they’re being bullied, like asking for help from a teacher, school counselor or their parents.

When students are being bullied, they often develop low self-esteem, Robinson added. Through both “Project Pack the Purse” and “Love the Skin You’re In” programs, the agencies’ goals are to stop bullying and boost every student’s confidence.

“SRVS and Wear It Well want to say no matter what the situation may be, you must love the skin you are in and focus on all the great things you can do and live your best life,” Robinson said.

At the end of the program, the young women paraded down the “runway” to show off their purses.
