The Memphis International Jazz Festival aims to preserve and expand the tradition and legacy of jazz in Memphis, TN through a new approach to the festival concert model. A 4-day festival the weekend before Thanksgiving.
The goal is to structure the festival with a variety of musical talent, and pay homage to the jazz traditions and the experiences within.

The festival kicked off Thursday, November 21st with an opening reception at Puck Food with a a performance by vocalist Chat Adaway. The African Jazz Ensemble with Ekpe Abioto kept the party going with a performance at the National Civil Rights Museum. Saturday the 23rd was wall to wall Jazz in Memphis. Jazz, Culture, and Art collided with past MIJF Artists-in-Residence during a free event at South Main Artspace Lofts. Scott McEwen from Memphis Magnetic Recording kept the Jazz experience going with a noon free pubic event. This was followed at 1:00 by a Memphis Jazz Legacy with Dr. Jack Cooper. At 2:00 the Memphis International Jazz Festival turned the spotlight on the future of Jazz with a special concert featuring The Memphis Jazz Workshop. This concert served as a fundraiser for Memphis Jazz Workshop to support their mission of reaching the next jazz generation.
The Memphis Jazz Workshop is a dedicated staff of professional jazz musicians under the leadership of Artistic Director and founder, Stephen M. Lee. The program offers access to training and performances for area youth. Saturday night came to a close with the truly memorable sounds of Talibah Safiya who performed at the Memphis Magnetic Recording Studio.
All of the performances took place in the Historic South Main Arts District, an area purposely designed with the performing arts and community in mind. Combined with solid musicianship and artistry, The Memphis International Jazz Festival showcases the best practices in audience engagement. With a commitment to service and exposure to quality creative experiences, MIJF 2019 was honored to host a fundraiser for Memphis Jazz Workshop and to make a $1000 donation to continue the work being done by the Memphis Jazz Workshop.
The core principles of The Memphis International Jazz Festival are to spread and share the jazz tradition while cultivating future audiences and artists. Through The Memphis International Jazz Festival, the community is invited to join in extending the legacy, tradition, and power of jazz.
