Winter Driving Mistakes To Avoid
January 04, 2021
Driving in the winter requires some extra precautions to stay safe on the road. Try to avoid these winter driving mistakes that put you and others at risk.

Getting behind the wheel means drivers must focus and exercise caution. However, winter driving presents unique dangers many drivers don’t consider. Look out for these winter driving mistakes to avoid this season.

Driving Too Fast

Snow and ice drastically hinder your ability to control your vehicle. Driving too fast can make it even harder to come to a stop or make safe turns. During the winter, it’s best to exercise caution and follow the speed limit so you can keep your car within your control on slick roads.

Following Too Closely

Leaving space between you and others is crucial during the winter season. Even when driving slower, it’ll take longer to come to a complete stop. You may face the risk of skidding. Leave at least a car’s length between you and the vehicle in front of you, so you have plenty of time to stop or maneuver around hazards.

Bundling up

While wearing a puffy coat, boots, and gloves will keep you warm when you get into your freezing car, they can hinder your ability to handle your vehicle. Heavy boots make it hard to gauge the responsiveness of your brake and gas pedals. Sometimes, they may be too wide for the pedals. Gloves can also make it difficult to grip the steering wheel, while a large coat and hat can obscure sightlines and your ability to check blind spots.

Bundling up is critical in cold weather, but you should consider taking off some outer layers once you’ve gotten into your vehicle.

Not Using Winter Tires

Making the switch to winter tires can greatly improve your safe driving during the season. Winter tires provide more traction on slick roads so you can handle any storm that comes your way.

Driving in cold and snowy conditions can be a challenge. For a safe winter season, look out for these winter driving mistakes to avoid.
