Turn up the Sizzle for the March of Dimes

By JR Robinson

Memphis has over 4000 local non profit organizations, all of which have a mission to do amazing work that serves the needs of our community.  The problem this creates for local business owners is that there are lots of request for help, donations, and volunteers.  The great news is Memphis is a city filled with people and businesses that grind it out every day to create a better life for they people they impact as well as the community around them.  The Signature Chefs of Memphis showed this spirit of grind and #BeAmazing support by showing up and cranking up the Sizzle in support of the March of Dimes.
On November the 15th, the Guest House at Graceland opened it’s doors to host the 2018 Signature Chefs Auction benefiting the March of Dimes.  The staff and the service of the Guest House was exceptional.  The management of the property was attentive and very supportive of the needs of the small local March of Dimes team.
The crew at Holidays Flowers came in and took care of the decor and it was beautiful.  Every detail from the elegant flowers to purple branded lights was a showcase of why Holiday Flowers is the go to partner for creating an elegant event.
Joe Birch from WMC TV 5 was on hand as the night’s emcee.  Joe has been an icon of Memphis media and on this night it was very clear how he has earned that reputation.  Joe anchors the 6:00 and 10:00 news and had to sandwich this event in between those newscast.  But for the guest and the team at the March of Dimes, it was clear that Joe was focused on creating a great night for all.  I want to speak for Rosa Potts and everyone at the March of Dimes in sending a big thank you to the amazing Mr Joe Birch, your personal and compassionate hosting of this event help create a night of excitement for this event.
Behind the scenes there was a bit of a challenge for the Memphis March of Dimes Executive Director.  Many non profit organizations around the country have had to make cutbacks in staffing, the result of this hit home for the Memphis chapter of the March of Dimes.  An office that once had a team of six people managing events like the Signature Chefs Auction has been reduced to a team of one.  Rosa Potts is not only the Executive Director of the Memphis office, she is the staff of one.  But at this gala Rosa was reminded of the fact that none of us are ever alone.  The March of Dimes sent in the cavalry of support personnel from around the region.  Then there were the countless volunteers who for months came together to help create this amazing event.  The volunteers were flawless in their execution of the many task that had to be completed to make this evening work.

Signature Chefs Auction Event Recap

I have to thank Kathleen and Matt Forbush for the incredible support they gave to this event.  Kathleen is daughter of FedEx Founder Fred Smith and she served as the Ambassador Mom for this event.  Kathleen and Matt showed the true spirit of giving back.  They welcomed the #FunCrew of JustMyMemphis into their home to share the families story of triplets that were born premature.  Kathleen worked hard in promoting the cause and she demonstrated the elegance and character of an amazing woman and even more so what it takes to be an amazing mom.  When your father is Fred Smith, how do you make a name for yourself?  Well Kathleen is not standing in a shadow of greatness, she stands on her own taking everything that has been given to her and making it better to improve the lives of others.  Kathleen and her family were both welcoming and accommodating in helping to bring attention to the March of Dimes.

Three liitle guys in mask stole the show.  Smith, Jackson, and Parker Forbush are Kathleen and Matt’s #BeAmazing triplets.  Early before the program started Smith came of to the stage to do a short interview with me.  Now remember Smith is only 3 years old.  He rocked it like a champion, it was only a matter of seconds before Parker and Jackson would join their brother on stage to wow the crowd.  They attended the event wearing mask and capes of their favorite Super Hero characters.  It was instantly clear that not only were these guys amazing boys, but Kathleen and Matt had already done an amazing job in training and grooming these young men.  Smith, Jackson, and Parker took the stage every chance they could.  They even helped with the auction.  Also joining the Forbush family in support of the March of Dimes was little Ruby.  Ruby is the youngest member of the Forbush family and she was there to support her mom and her big brothers on their big night!

The stars of the night were the amazing chefs …This event was a great example of what the future of our city looks like

The stars of the night were the amazing chefs.  I have had the opportunity to work with Chef Josh from Strano by Chef Josh on a few stories, events, and features.  This event was a great example of what the future of our city looks like.  Josh is a young chef with lots of talent and lots of energy mixed with a confidence in himself without the arrogance that you sometimes fine in the high society kitchens of the city.  If you have been watching the news or social media lately, you will see that Josh is quickly becoming a household name.  His work on the Signature Chefs Auction demonstrates the value that he brings to our city.  Josh shows up not just to promote his business, he shows up to be apart of the mission and to put in the work to make amazing things happen for the organizations he lends his name to.  Josh was joined by  David Todd from Interim Restaurant & Bar, Gary Williams from the Krewe Of DeJavu, plus chefs from Cafe 1912, Sweet Magnolia Gelato Co., The Capital Grille (Memphis), Gold Strike Casino Resort | Tunica, MS, Dave’s Bagels, Frost Bake Shop, Starbucks, and Another Broken Egg.

At the end of the night, Memphis had pull off another amazing evening of giving for an amazing cause.  Thank you everyone who attended and thank you to everyone reading and sharing the #BeAmazing stories here on JustMyMemphis!

Amazon’s Past Reveals the Future of FedEx

I was sitting down with a friend who works in sales at FedEx a few years ago and I brought up the question of Amazon replacing FedEx as a dominant player in shipping. My friend said that would never happen. FedEx isn’t worried about Amazon. At that time Amazon Prime was new. Amazon had just purchased a fleet of jets and trailers for shipping. A look at Amazon’s past was like the handwriting on the wall for me.
