Shelby Residential and Vocational Services (SRVS) and Wear It Well Inc. are teaming up to host their “Project Pack the Purse” event Friday, March 1 at Oakhaven Middle School.

The agencies have filled purses with essential, personal hygiene products for young girls, including toothbrushes and toothpaste, mouthwash, deodorant, lotion, soap and more. More than 50 purses will be given away.

“Our goal of Project Pack the Purse is to make certain that these young women have the things they need to continue to be able to come to school and not be ashamed for not having what’s needed,” said Felicia Robinson, SRVS’ director of community services.

Also during the event, students will participate in the “Love the Skin You’re In” program, which focuses on building self-esteem, anti-bullying, suicide prevention and diversity inclusion.

“Many times we hear the stories of young ladies being bullied or having low self-esteem, and this directly correlates to many of the same stresses that people with disabilities face on a day to day basis,” Robinson said. “SRVS and Wear It Well want to say no matter what the situation may be, you must love the skin you are in and focus on all the great things you can do and live your best life.”

Robinson added that the partnership with Wear It Well is important to SRVS and is a way to give back to the community that has supported the agency’s mission of helping people with disabilities.
