Why did you get started in salt caves?

I wanted to bring another healing/mind/body modality to the community that has been extremely beneficial to me personally. Halotherapy is not only for yoga students, but for individuals who do not practice yoga. The wide variety of conditions halotherapy benefits and relieves is so far reaching and infinite that it is mind-boggling. With very little effort and no contraindications that have been identified to date, halotherapy can be easily incorporated in an existing exercise program and medical protocol that will enhance and compliment anyone’s lifestyle. The only requirement is to breathe and to get oneself into the salt caves.

What is salt caves and what are the benefits?

Halotherapy is a dry salt therapy that utilizes a halogenerator to grind and crush 99.99% Medical Grade Sodium Chloride (salt) into micronized particles that are dispersed into a salt room, salt cave, or salt chamber via a dry salt aerosol that works to reduce inflammation from the inside out for a plethora of conditions both physical and mental. Salt is an excellent conductor of negative ions and creates a sterile, allergen-free environment when pumped into a salt cave or room. Salt is known for its antibacterial, anti-fungal and anti-microbial properties, and inhaling salt can cleanse the body of harmful organisms. If there is no halogenerator, there is no halotherapy.

Halotherapy has been known to relieve symptoms of Allergies, Asthma, COPD, Emphysema and Bronchitis, Coughs, Flu, Cystic Fibrosis, Ear Infections, Psoriasis, Eczema, Acne, Sinus Infections, Chronic Sinusitis, Stress, Anxiety, Fatigue, and Snoring. Halotherapy promotes sounder sleep, benefits athletes, seniors, healthy individuals, children, and babies as young as two weeks old.
Devastated first from my father’s death and eight years later from my mother’s, I wanted to make something good out of what was so tragic in my life. When my father passed away I ran the Chicago marathon in his memory and raised so much money that I was put on the board of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society for many years until my tenure ran out. After partnering with Wings of The West Clinic for several years, they lost their benefits to fund our free to yoga cancer classes, and I continued this mission in memory of my parents Sylvia and Louis Kirschner who both died from cancer.
If you are a cancer patient or survivor you may come to the Free Yoga Class for Cancer on Saturday afternoons at 1:30 pm. The cancer patients have formed a comrade and support each other in many ways, even outside the studio. Those who are afflicted with cancer often feel alone, isolated, and depressed and benefit so much from moving and breathing and feeling somewhat alive in a regular setting like the studio. Being a support person myself, I know the draining uncertainty associated with that role. Not only is it helpful for the support person(s) to nourish their loved ones, they also need to take care of themselves. Opening the free cancer classes to two support persons per session alongside the patient benefits both tremendously, as they can share this positive experience together in addition to relieving a lot of anxiety that is present for both the patient and support person.

What we offer

There are three separate rooms or caves in the salt building, each having it’s own halogenerator in the room. The largest room is the “Salt Relaxation Room” that houses ten zero gravity chairs to recline and relax in for the 45 minute halo therapy session. The floor in the relax room is covered with approximately 2 1/2 tons of Himalayan salt, and the walls and are covered in Himalayan salt bricks and panels of large salt rocks. The ceiling lights twinkle above like stars shining in a beautiful and clear night sky. The panels are illuminated with different colors which can be changed at any time to create a relaxing or invigorating atmosphere and enhances one’s overall experience. The use of chromotherapy, sometimes referred to as color therapy, colorology or cromatherapy is an alternative modality that uses light in the form of color to balance “energy” lacking from a person’s body, whether it be on a physical, emotional, spiritual, or mental level.

A session in the salt relax room must be reserved beforehand since space is limited. You can wear comfortable clothing for the relax session, and we provide blankets, disposable booties and head covers, and ear phones for self volume control. The booties and head cover are required because the room is kept sterile and at a temperature between 68° and 70° with humidity at a low level to keep the environment sterile.
The walls, ceiling, and baseboards have salt and tile panels and both use Chromotherapy to enhance the atmosphere and mood. A yoga mat is needed for class but we provide the yoga props. Regular yoga attire is recommended and layers if you are a cold natured person. Every yoga class is done barefoot, without socks or shoes~no booties or head cover required! Bottled water may be brought into the yoga room, unlike in the salt caves where no beverages are allowed. Salty yoga classes are from 60 to 75 minutes in length, and must be reserved beforehand due to limited space.
The “Salty Yoga Room” has a wood floor like our other yoga rooms, it’s own halogenerator that disperses salt for 45 minutes during the yoga class that promotes deeper and fuller diaphragmatic breathing for a more sustainable yoga practice and a longer healthier life.
The third room in the salt cave is a private room that houses a warm salt relaxation bed with it’s own halogenerator. Fifteen hundred pounds of loose Himalayan salt covers the floor, with salt tiles on the wall and baseboards. Chromotherapy enhances the room in the wall and along the inside of the salt bed. The bed is filled with Himalayan salt to lay in, which helps reduce symptoms of skin irritations and skin conditions, reduce inflammation from arthritis, sore muscles, and achy swollen joints. The salt bed heats up to three levels, and can be used with a disposable sheet to recline on during the 45 minute salt bed session or not. Disposable booties and head covers are required in this service. By using the salt bed both the outer skin and insides are receiving a double dose of dry salt therapy. The bed also must be reserved prior to each session.
Yoga mystics say “Everyone is given the same amount of breaths per life, the longer and fuller the breath – the longer and fuller the life.” So it goes without saying, to live a healthy and long life everyone should incorporate halotherapy into their lives on a regular basis to breathe better.
