ABOUT US

“The origin of the name ‘Cazateatro’

In August of 2006, Gio López gathered a group of people interested in learning and doing theater, which she called Cazateatro Independent Theatre. The word ‘Cazateatro’ came about as a complex play on words. First, finding people interested in doing theater was a real hunt (caza, in Spanish). Also, the group gathered and rehearsed in public parks because they didn’t have a place they could call home (casa). The participants wound up opening up their homes in order to give Cazateatro its home. This anecdote of the group’s beginnings shows how the words casa and caza came to merge, giving rise to the name ‘Cazateatro’.

History

Cazateatro Independent Theatre operated actively from 2006 to 2009, under the leadership of Gio López. Afterwards there followed a period of inactivity due to a lack of participants. In 2010 there began a new adventure, when a group of women with a shared dream gathered together to make it come true. That dream was animated by love of theater, and at the same time love of their Latin culture and its vast inner diversity.
These women began to gather weekly under the direction of Mónica Sánchez, strengthening their work as artists and as a theater company. After evaluating various alternative names, they decided to identify the group by the name Cazateatro, but with a variant that would stress inclusiveness: thus Cazateatro Independent Theatre evolved into Cazateatro Bilingual Theatre Group.

Beginnings as Bilingual Theatre Group

Animated by the mission of spreading and sharing our language and our Latin American culture through the scenic arts, we began preparations for our first production, and in April 2011 Cazateatro Bilingual Theatre Group presented Ramón, by playwright Sergio Belbel, under the direction of Mónica Sánchez, actress and director of Cazateatro.

The work Ramón gave the group an opportunity to become known as the first bilingual theater group in Memphis. It also inspired others to join the group and share in the Spanish-English theater experience. Through six years of intense work, Cazateatro has produced in a range of genres, including theater of the absurd, pantomime, collective creation, and others. Today, Cazateatro is the firt bilingual Theatre Group in TN.
