The Krewe Of DeJavu is a place I was looking forward to visit simply because of the incredible Chef, Gary Williams, that runs the place in an amazing way. This is an Original Authentic Creole restaurant where they also serve the best Soulfood, Vegan, and Vegetarian foods. Chef Gary Williams has rightly developed a reputation as one of the best cooks in the mid-south. The part I love most is that this guy didn’t learn from attending years of culinary school, but he spent years with his mother and grandmother learning from them and through self-teaching. With every bite, you can taste the delicious style of New Orleans as if you were in his grandmothers home right then!

Apart from the Chef’s food, he uses his restaurant in as many ways he can to benefit the community. You can find him and his Krewe at SRVS every year, they’ve been at March of Dimes, Heal The Hood Foundation, and so many more. They truly are all over the community! Not only this, but when they have leftover food at night they go bring it to the homeless when they can. “Help, help, help..” Is what Chef Gary Williams states, he loves to help and he has a huge passion and heart for giving back to the community.

The most popular association with The Krewe Of DeJavu is their food truck and catering services. Don’t hesitate to go grab their food on wheels or have an event catered by the Krewe, you won’t regret it!

Into The Kitchen!

Chef Michael Patrick is one of those people that deserve every part of the title “Chef” being placed before their name, and this isn’t just because his food is delicious!

I got the opportunity to go behind the scenes at Rizzo’s Diner with the Chef and see how he prepares a burger that is by no means a normal burger. One of the things that I love most about this Diner is that all the ingredients, whether that be in the back of the kitchen to the ingredients at the bar, all come from a local source. Not only is this great support for the community but you can taste the difference in the freshness through every bite!

As he talked me through his process of creating this burger, there was no doubt that he had an enormous amount of passion behind getting the ingredients just right. Apart from that, a heart for making Rizzo’s Diner a place that is delicious and welcoming in every form.  This is a dish that is inspired by many different people and many different dishes. The homemade patty is seared on both sides along with the bread before cooking in the oven with cheese.

After finishing up the burger, we headed on over to the bar where Cindy showed us the creation of some of the most popular cocktails at Rizzo’s. I was also very pleasantly surprised to see the large selection of whiskey’s all based in Tennessee.

From spending a short afternoon in this Diner and getting a taste of the Rizzo’s experience, I can confidently say that if you haven’t checked out this gem, this must be the next place on your list! You can check out their menu on our new local 411’s page here!

Fighting MS One Beer At A Time‏

Fighting MS One Beer At A Time‏

Through craft beer, food and live music The 7th Annual Brew Movement Against Multiple Sclerosis was founded by Joseph Barnes to benefit the Mid-South Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

About 2.3 million people are affected by multiple sclerosis (MS) worldwide. MS is an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system that disrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and body. The cause of MS is still unknown; however, scientists believe the disease is triggered by as-yet-unidentified environmental factor(s) in a person who is genetically predisposed to respond.

The Mid South Chapter of the National MS Society, works to improve the quality of life for people affected by MS in Tennessee, North Georgia, North Mississippi and Eastern Arkansas and raise funds for critical MS research through events like the Brew Movement Against Multiple Sclerosis.

This grassroots charitable event will feature a various styles of homebrew as well as craft beer to sample along with a variety of edibles, making for an entertaining way to support a good cause. To go along with the wide variety of craft beer and food, there will also be a silent auction, as well as key note speakers talking about their experiences with MS.

This event is the only beer festival for the Multiple Sclerosis Society in the entire Southeastern United States and will be held at the beautiful Pink Palace Museum and mansion.

Tickets for the Brew Movement are $35 in advance and $40 at the door. Note that the number of tickets at the door will be limited.

AWARD-WINNING MISSISSIPPI CHEF VISHWESH BHATT COMES TO GUNSHOW

AWARD-WINNING MISSISSIPPI CHEF VISHWESH BHATT COMES TO GUNSHOW

Gunshow’s popular “Hired Guns” series is in its third year, and the 2016 lineup of guest chefs has already made a big bang with Kevin Gillespie’s friend and fellow “Top Chef” alum chef Brian Voltaggio. Next to visit is chef Vishwesh Bhatt of City Grocery Restaurant Group in Oxford, Mississippi, who will be making a guest appearance on Sunday, March 13 and Monday, March 14. Diners will have the opportunity to mingle with Bhatt and taste his cuisine while also experiencing Gunshow’s unique service style and innovative dishes.

Bhatt, a native of Gujarat, India, known for connecting Southern and South Asian foodways, serves as corporate chef of City Grocery Restaurant Group, overseeing the kitchens at City Grocery, Snackbar, Big Bad Breakfast, Main Event Catering andLamar Lounge. He joined the City Grocery Restaurant Group in 1997 and under the direction of chef John Currence, Bhatt began working as a line cook at City Grocery. After a brief hiatus, Bhatt returned to the City Grocery Restaurant Group in 2001, as the catering chef and worked his way up, before going on to open Snackbar in 2009. His menu of French bistro fare married with Mississippi’s culinary traditions earned him a People’s Best New Chef nomination from Food & Wine in 2011 and a James Beard Awards finalist slot for Best Chef: South in 2014 and 2015.

“I’m really excited to work with Kevin and the Gunshow team,” says Bhatt. “We share a deep appreciation for where we come from, Southern cuisine and injecting other cultural influences and exotic flavors into classic Southern ingredients.”

Gillespie, along with Gunshow’s executive chef Joey Ward and the rest of the restaurant’s “kitchen dudes” will be cooking alongside Bhatt both nights. A limited number of tickets are available for purchase via Xorbia. The cost is $95 per person (not including drinks, tax and gratuity).

“The best part about Hired Guns is the way the guest chefs and the Gunshow team feed off of each other’s creativity,” says Gillespie.  “I think our guests can really feel how much culinary passion is in the room during these dinners; the excitement is tangible.”

The remaining 2016″Hired Guns” lineup is as follows:

  • May 22-23: Brian Baxter from HUSK in Nashville, Tennessee (Tickets on sale April 22 at 8 a.m.)
  • June 12-13: Kenny Gilbert of Gilbert’s Underground Kitchen in Fernandina Beach, Florida (Tickets on sale May 12 at 8 a.m.)
  • September 11-12: Brooke Williamson of Hudson House in Redondo Beach, California (Tickets on sale August 11 at 8 a.m.)
  • October 16-17: Vivian Howard of Chef & the Farmer in Kinston, North Carolina (Tickets on sale September 16 at 8 a.m.)

Gunshow is located at 924 Garrett Street. The restaurant is open for dinner Tuesday through Saturday from 6 to 9 p.m. Reservations are accepted but not required. Guests may park in the Glenwood Park parking lot and on the street. For more information, visit gunshowatl.comor call 404-380-1886.
