It was a Thursday evening and I had a craving for wings. We decided on a Wing place that was very close to our home. When we arrived, it was very busy and we decided to go somewhere else. As we were walking back to the car, we saw it. Portales Mexican Restaurant. It was in the same shopping center so we thought, why not.

The moment we walked in, we knew we had made a great choice. The atmosphere was fun and upbeat, the ambiance and decor was lively and inviting. The host sat us in a very cool booth that was painted in bright colors and each booth offered its own unique privacy.

As most Mexican restaurants do, we were quickly presented with salsa and chips. The salsa was very flavorful and a tad on the hot side, but nothing too drastic. It was the perfect consistency with just the right amount of thickness that allowed it to sit nicely on the very fresh tortilla chip. I also ordered the made fresh guacamole. I love guacamole and I was pleased with the Portales advocado wonder. It had the right amount of garlic, lime, and cilantro. It was nice and thick the way I prefer it. At this point our time at Portales is going great.

Our server, Greg was friendly and very attentive. He was able to answer any questions we had concerning the menu. Greg is the brother of the owner. Jose and Mayra Sevilla opened Portales about a year ago, and they have been blessed by great business and many return guests. Jose is from Jalisco, Mexico and he makes sure each dish has that authentic flair.

I decided on the Seafood Buritto and my wife had a Grilled Chicken Salad. We both made great choices. When the food arrived, we both commented on the generous portions. My burrito was huge. It was served with beans and rice. When I cut into the buritto, it was filled with talapia and shrimp. It was covered in a rich and creamy cheese sauce. It was delicious. It had the right amount of everything, the peppers, the onions, the cheese, all just the right amount so to let the seafood take its rightful place on my tastebuds. My wife was over the moon with her Grilled Chicken Salad. The chicken was cooked perfectly and she loved the seasoning and spices with the hint of citrus. She is a little on the picky side so she was equally pleased that they fixed the salad exactly leaving off the ingredients she did not want.

Portales was a great experience and I highly recommend it if you are in the mood for some great authentic Mexican food. The service was excellent and we liked it so much we went back the very next night. Portales is a hit on Germantown Parkway. A hit that you don’t want to miss.

Until next time, buenos Dias.

The Krewe Of DeJavu is a place I was looking forward to visit simply because of the incredible Chef, Gary Williams, that runs the place in an amazing way. This is an Original Authentic Creole restaurant where they also serve the best Soulfood, Vegan, and Vegetarian foods. Chef Gary Williams has rightly developed a reputation as one of the best cooks in the mid-south. The part I love most is that this guy didn’t learn from attending years of culinary school, but he spent years with his mother and grandmother learning from them and through self-teaching. With every bite, you can taste the delicious style of New Orleans as if you were in his grandmothers home right then!

Apart from the Chef’s food, he uses his restaurant in as many ways he can to benefit the community. You can find him and his Krewe at SRVS every year, they’ve been at March of Dimes, Heal The Hood Foundation, and so many more. They truly are all over the community! Not only this, but when they have leftover food at night they go bring it to the homeless when they can. “Help, help, help..” Is what Chef Gary Williams states, he loves to help and he has a huge passion and heart for giving back to the community.

The most popular association with The Krewe Of DeJavu is their food truck and catering services. Don’t hesitate to go grab their food on wheels or have an event catered by the Krewe, you won’t regret it!

Into The Kitchen!

Chef Michael Patrick is one of those people that deserve every part of the title “Chef” being placed before their name, and this isn’t just because his food is delicious!

I got the opportunity to go behind the scenes at Rizzo’s Diner with the Chef and see how he prepares a burger that is by no means a normal burger. One of the things that I love most about this Diner is that all the ingredients, whether that be in the back of the kitchen to the ingredients at the bar, all come from a local source. Not only is this great support for the community but you can taste the difference in the freshness through every bite!

As he talked me through his process of creating this burger, there was no doubt that he had an enormous amount of passion behind getting the ingredients just right. Apart from that, a heart for making Rizzo’s Diner a place that is delicious and welcoming in every form.  This is a dish that is inspired by many different people and many different dishes. The homemade patty is seared on both sides along with the bread before cooking in the oven with cheese.

After finishing up the burger, we headed on over to the bar where Cindy showed us the creation of some of the most popular cocktails at Rizzo’s. I was also very pleasantly surprised to see the large selection of whiskey’s all based in Tennessee.

From spending a short afternoon in this Diner and getting a taste of the Rizzo’s experience, I can confidently say that if you haven’t checked out this gem, this must be the next place on your list! You can check out their menu on our new local 411’s page here!

Fighting MS One Beer At A Time‏

Fighting MS One Beer At A Time‏

Through craft beer, food and live music The 7th Annual Brew Movement Against Multiple Sclerosis was founded by Joseph Barnes to benefit the Mid-South Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

About 2.3 million people are affected by multiple sclerosis (MS) worldwide. MS is an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system that disrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and body. The cause of MS is still unknown; however, scientists believe the disease is triggered by as-yet-unidentified environmental factor(s) in a person who is genetically predisposed to respond.

The Mid South Chapter of the National MS Society, works to improve the quality of life for people affected by MS in Tennessee, North Georgia, North Mississippi and Eastern Arkansas and raise funds for critical MS research through events like the Brew Movement Against Multiple Sclerosis.

This grassroots charitable event will feature a various styles of homebrew as well as craft beer to sample along with a variety of edibles, making for an entertaining way to support a good cause. To go along with the wide variety of craft beer and food, there will also be a silent auction, as well as key note speakers talking about their experiences with MS.

This event is the only beer festival for the Multiple Sclerosis Society in the entire Southeastern United States and will be held at the beautiful Pink Palace Museum and mansion.

Tickets for the Brew Movement are $35 in advance and $40 at the door. Note that the number of tickets at the door will be limited.
