The Mission at SRVS

To provide the services that people with disabilities need to live meaningful lives as members of their community. Our vision is a community that supports personal growth, happiness, options and opportunities for people with developmental disabilities.

SRVS makes it a point to have participants in their program live life with the quality they deserve. Scheduled outings are a great way for individuals to just explore the city. I got to tag along as we scoured different areas of the city like Bass Pro and the Tennessee Welcome Center.

I got to know the ground I was with through just hanging out. Our group leader “Miss Cathy” was very engaged with everyone. Asking questions, seeing if the class knew colors or what was on a price tag. Getting feedback of things we were looking at and interacting makes an experience much more engaging and I think that is really important and I’m grinned seeing someone so caring leading the group around.

The Sparkling Nights fundraiser hosted by SRVS is coming soon in August, come out an support the #BeAmazing people of SRVS.

SRVS Outing – danny, andree, and josephine

I got the opportunity to go on an outing with SRVS and spend time with the wonderful people invovled.

Danny is halarious and loves to encourage and help others around him, Andree is shy at first but once he opens up he enjoys time with others, and Josephine is easy going a lover of coffee!

We had great time together as we had morning coffee (and sprite) at Krystals; headed over to go bowling and watch them win some strikes and spares; and then move on to the mall where we ate lunch together, explored the mall, and played games!

This organization is incredible with the way they serve their community, I hope you will join in on the Sparkling Nights fundraiser they have coming soon in August to continue to help and support the amazing ways they give back!

Community Health Fair by the Methodist Sickle Cell Center
Sickle Cell Disease has been lost in the shuffle of illnesses people in our community battle for many years now. Many of you who are now reading this article are wondering what Sickle Cell Disease is. Which adds to the point. So what is Sickle Cell?

Sickle Cell Disease is a blood disorder that causes one’s red blood cells to become dehydrated and sickle-shaped. Which is nowhere near normal and causes a lot of complications. This is a genetic illness, which means that the only way to have Sickle Cell is to be born with is. Which is why education on Sickle Cell is so important! Methodist has done so much to help teach those affected by Sickle Cell about the disease. Doing so with the goal of breaking the sickle cycle. Knowing about Sickle Cell helps people avoid making decisions that will cause more kids to be born with the disease.

Sickle Cell causes many complications n someone’s life. Being that their red blood cells are abnormal, it is hard for those cells to flow through a person’s blood veins. Which causes A LOT of pain when what is called a “Sickle Cell Crisis” flares. This is the main problem someone living with this disease face, but there a many more. To list a few, many deals with bone deterioration, organ failure, blindness, depression, and anxiety, etc.

The Health Fair is aimed at bringing awareness to our community about Sickle Cell Disease and the importance of knowing your sickle status, as well as offering free health screenings, and education on living an all-around healthy life.  This event will occur inside Wilson Hall Gymnasium, located on the campus of Methodist University Hospital at 251 S. Claybrook (corner of Linden and S. Claybrook).
There will be face painting, line dancing, giveaways, food and much, much more.  Bring the whole family out to this event!

Let’s come out and get educated! Thus helping our community #BeAmazing! See you all there!

FASHION WEEK at the No More Silence Foundation

FASHION WEEK at the No More Silence Foundation

FASHION WEEK

By LaTrossica Wilson

This article is being brought to you by The Memphis Urban League, Follow Us in the Countdown to 75!

There are so many different programs and organizations for children that offer great ways to impact lives. However the No More Silence Foundation Center opened in May 2018 right here in the city of Memphis, offering unique ways through the arts to engage children and their families an opportunity that will impact their lives forever. The No More Silence Foundation is a non-profit organization pending as an exempt organization describe in section 501 (C)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.

Our program also includes an A.R.T.S Summer Camp that is taking place this summer for children ages 4-14. A.R.T.S. stands for A REASON TO SURVIVE. Often time children feel as though they have no reason to live after being faced with adversity. Mrs. Wilson and her team is changing that mentality.

Each week of the A.R.T.S Summer Camp, we offer different themes to help with exposing and educating the campers. The week of June 11-June 15 was Fashion week. On Wednesday, June 13th, we celebrated National Sewing Machine Day and our National Fashion Day.

We invited Memphis’s own Jenni Graham. Ms. Graham is a fashion model, designer, fashion stylist, model coach, creative director, and the CEO of J.Chic Life Style Boutique.

Our goal for that day was to focus on the principals of art elements with designs and fashion. We had our campers to explore through creative areas of fashion using sewing machines, jewelry designs, fabric, patterns, styles, and a fashion show to model their designs down a yellow brick road made of posterboard.

The campers and staff had a ball!

Learn more about our program at our website to find out what’s this week at the No More Silence Foundation.

Community Baby Shower – JUICE Orange Mound

Community Baby Shower – JUICE Orange Mound

Community baby shower

juice orange mound

By Britney Thornton

This article is being brought to you by Fresh Start Facility Services Click to learn more!

You are young, pregnant, and live in Orange Mound.

The life growing inside of you eats what you eat, goes where you go, and lives the way you live.  You wonder how your baby will be affected by the income per capita being less than $17,347?  How will you beat the 64% chance that your child will not make over $29,900 as an adult?  How living in a food desert will pose a challenge for the life of your beloved bundle of joy?

“I will do the best I can,” you say.  Despite the generational poverty, I shall overcome.  Beyond the food access crisis, I shall endure.  Withstanding transportation challenges, I will find a way.

Truth be told, your due date feels more like dooms day.  How you are to protect and provide for the life in side of you is beyond you.  You mean well but deep inside you question if your best will be good enough.  You need help but do not know where to begin.

Somewhere in the community, a non-profit leader desires to host a community baby shower.  She reaches out to friend Carey Moore at The House, a women’s resource center located at Semmes and Carnes—she loves the idea and would love to serve as the venue for the event.

She reaches out to other personal contacts and starts to mobilize a team of service providers for pregnant mothers.  She learns about a midwife/nurse practitioner Nikia Grayson on Facebook and reaches out—she would love to participate!

She even learns that there is already an annual baby shower hosted by the Orange Mound Civic Club and reaches out with the organizers to collaborate.  Fortunately, they are looking to expand the event and love the idea of hosting the community baby shower in August.  Things are shaping up nicely.

But, you have not met the non-profit leader.  You have no idea that the help you desire is planning for the future of you and your baby.  You have no idea that your community is ready to wrap around you to ensure your success as a mother raising a child in Orange Mound.

You are cordially invited to attend the Community Baby Shower hosted by JUICE Orange Mound this August 2018.  A partnership with a host of community-based organizations including BSTARS, Project Fresh, the Urban Garden and Wellness Center, and The House, this event is for all pregnant and new mothers in the Orange Mound area.  Each mother will be connected to a mentor mother as well as service providers who are prepared to assist in making this transition into motherhood smooth.

Please help us reach the future mothers of The Mound by calling 901-300-6621, emailing jommemphis@gmail.com, or leaving a message in the JUICE Orange Mound inbox on Facebook.  We need YOUR help to ensure the success of this event, thank you!
