Cash savers big opening
Packed to the gills
By Rick James
As a 30+ year Memphis resident, I am comfortable in saying this is my home. My wife and I have raised a family here and started the Cash Saver business. Recently, we celebrated the grand opening of our 4th Cash Saver location in Memphis. When Kroger vacated that space on South Third, it was big news in our city. It would leave that neighborhood in dire straits with respect to access to a full-service grocer.
We were approached by some advocates in the area and the seed was planted. Our store provides an excellent solution for fixed and low-income neighborhoods. The deep discount pricing formula is applied to every item in the store. Our customers have access to fresh fruits and vegetables, fresh meat and fully staffed meat department in addition to local, national and store brands. Our focus is always on affordability, access and quality. Everyone deserves eat well and to eat enough. It was a very important move to us as this particular store filled a gaping hole. We are the only grocery within a 3-mile radius. In neighborhoods where both budget and transportation can be issues, Cash Saver is a great option.
We operate and build our business with all of these factors in mind. While we are a business but we are also a part of a community. We care and as good neighbors, we invest in those communities. Giving back is important to me personally but is also a part of our corporate culture. The first thing that I was taught over 40 years ago on my first job in a grocery store was that the lifeblood of a store is its loyal customers. If you want the residents to be loyal and embrace you as their store, you need to be a part of the fiber of that neighborhood by contributing back to other important aspects of their life. In addition to community events that we sponsor and support, we feel that by saving customers money on their food bill, we help them meet other financial needs they face.
Interview with Owner Rick James
Our experience with our other Cash Saver stores has been that customers travel from a further distance than to a conventional supermarket. We expect to attract a diverse group of customers from the immediate neighborhood, but also from downtown Memphis, and across the river in West Memphis because of how easy this store is to get to from those areas.
Each day our store has been packed to the gills, which to me is indicative of how great the need is. And, the South Memphis community has welcomed us with open arms – including the “Mapco Lady.” We are so very grateful for our friends and supporters. We hope to continue building and serving our neighbors in the city. We are Memphis and Memphis is us!
