“A New Era In Sickle Cell Disease.” That was the theme of this year’s Regional Sickle Cell Conference, hosted by St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. This theme couldn’t have been truer. It is truly a new era. Doctor’s from across the region came to Memphis and presented their research and other ways there are actively trying their best to make amazing progress in treatment.

One thing that really stands out to me most is the continuous fight to improve the way Sickle Cell patients are treated in the Emergency Departments and during hospital admissions. There has always been an issue surrounding the way people fighting Sickle Cell Disease were treated. Especially when they were in the ED crying of pain and begging the doctors for medications that would help ease the pain. So much was expressed about this topic. I really wish I could talk about everything that was brought up during this enlightening conference, but then you all would be reading forever.

One major thing to take away from this past Saturday, May 19th, is the interaction of both Patients and Doctors. Everyone had a chance to listen to one another and express their feelings, their concerns, and their hopes for the future of Sickle Cell. Being able to sit and listen to all the wonderful things that are coming soon to treat sickle cell pain is so comforting. Even more so, it is so important to mention that the Researchers are also actively looking for a way to cure this disease. I want to “jump the gun” and say that the wait may not be as long as some may think. The passion the doctors have for our lives has surely made a difference in our community. Their passion along with the drive of people living with Sickle Cell has really made progress a for sure thing.

In conclusion, it is time for a change! I plead with everyone reading this article to wake up and take note of this disease called Sickle Cell. It impacts many many many lives across the world! “A NEW ARE IN SICKLE CELL DISEASE!” Yes, it truly is.
